Ferry Melchels is an assistant professor at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh where he studies polymeric biomaterials, particularly to be used with biofabrication techniques. His main interests are in the development of 3D printed smart scaffolds, hydrogel-based bio-inks for bioprinting, and mechanical reinforcement of tissue constructs.

Ferry is a trained chemical engineer (BSc) and polymer scientist (MSc and PhD) from the University of Twente (The Netherlands). He has been a Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellow between Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane (AU) and University Medical Center Utrecht (NL) before recently relocating to Heriot-Watt University to set up his own group within the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering.
